Oh, I find myself having to illustrate this more and more.

Squirrels and hamsters and the like =/= Otters, ferrets, weasels (or raccoons, although that's a separate point).

Squirrels and hamsters are both, by definitions, rodents. They are in the order Rodentia (which I'm sure you can guess, means rodents), with hamsters being members of the subfamily Cricetinae and squirrels of the family Sciuridae. Otters, ferrets, etc. are members of the order carnivora (which, against somewhat obviously, means its members are carnivorans [carnivores, yes, but not all carnivores are carnivorans]), and are all in the family Mustelidae.

Sure, they're all mammals, but that's where the similarity ends. Squirrels, hamsters, etc. aren't even carnivorans (cats, admittedly, are, but they're in the family Felidae).

Summary [1]:

Full squirrel taxonomy: Animalia, Chordata, Mammalia, Rodentia, Sciuromorpha, Sciuridae. (Your classic tree squirrel is a Sciurus carolinensis, out in interest.)

Full otter taxonomy: Animalia, Chordata, Mammalia, Carnivora, Caniformia, Mustelidae, Lutrinae.
